Cerebral Palsy

Definition

  • Non-progessive syndrome of brain damage causing altered posture & movement & occasional sensory & intellectual dysfunction
  • Caused by lesion of the brain, generally motor but also sensation & cognitive development may be involved
  • Only 10% of lesions are post natal
  • Perinatal hypoxia, prematurity, low birth weight are all factors
  • Types include spastic, athetoid, mixed, ataxic, hypotonia
